Danone North America, Ahold Delhaize USA, and The Nature Conservancy have initiated a landmark pilot program focused on reducing methane emissions—a significant environmental challenge faced by the dairy industry.
Farmers and Food Giants Collaborate to Reduce Methane Emissions
The pilot targets methane emissions, primarily from cows, over a five-year period, specifically in Danone's yogurt products supplied by Ahold Delhaize brands. With Danone aiming to cut dairy emissions from fresh milk supply by 30% by 2030, the program is part of their broader Danone Impact Journey.

Jessie Copeland of Danone North America highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts with farm partners in employing regenerative practices that benefit both local communities and the company. The Nature Conservancy will aid dairy producers by implementing sustainable farming tools such as manure separators and compost turners to improve methane management. Furthermore, they will provide sustainable finance resources to agrifood companies to foster market-driven sustainability practices.

Katie Anderson from EDF emphasized the critical nature of methane reduction, due to its potent climate effect, underscoring the necessity for cooperative strategies along the supply chain to empower small and family-owned farms in these efforts.Despite financial hurdles in climate sustainability, the cooperative initiative between the food and ag sectors remains pivotal in addressing climate impacts and ensuring supply chain stability amid erratic weather patterns.
