Environmental Policy Hits EU Dairy: US Set to Dominate Exports

The global dairy market is experiencing a major shift as environmental regulations in the European Union (EU) drastically reduce dairy production, potentially cutting exports by 40-50%. The EU, which previously accounted for about 32% of global dairy trade, is seeing its position eroded due to new nitrogen and ammonium discharge regulations. Projections indicate a reduction in cow numbers by up to 5% over the next decade.

This decline opens a significant opportunity for the United States (US), which is positioned to become the new dairy superpower. The US has expanded its milk production by a third in the past 20 years, reaching approximately 100 million metric tonnes. The country's advantage lies in its efficient, scalable production systems capable of rapid expansion.

Furthermore, the US is investing in mega-farms and billion-dollar processing facilities to support increased milk flows. The EU's shrinking dairy output also complicates its new free trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc, offering the US a chance to solidify its emerging dominance in dairy economics and trade.
