In response to the unexpected spread of H5N1 influenza in US dairy cows, FFAR and Purdue University are investing in vaccine development.

Since March 2024, the H5N1 influenza virus has made an unprecedented jump from primarily affecting wild migratory birds and sporadic poultry outbreaks, to infecting dairy cows in the United States. This alarming spread across multiple states has left the dairy industry scrambling for protective measures.
In a bid to address this crisis, the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR), in collaboration with Purdue University, is dedicating $301,562 to the "Rapid Outcomes from Agricultural Research" (ROAR) grant. This initiative aims to expedite the development of a vaccine tailored specifically for dairy cattle, as announced in a recent press release by FFAR.
