Drought in south-west Victoria hits dairy pastures
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, year-to-date rainfall is tracking below average in the South West, Central and East Gippsland districts and parts of the West and South Gippsland districts. In September, rainfall was below average across much of the state and the lowest on record across the south-west. Portland recorded 601 mm of rain from the start of the year to the end of October against a long-term average of 729 mm, Warrnambool 563 mm against 631 mm, and Branxholme 445 mm against 570 mm. Farms reliant on dams face water shortages.
According to Australian Dairy Farmers President Ben Bennett, most dairy regions are enjoying a good season. However, in the Koroit, Port Fairy and Heywood districts, farmers reliant on surface water are seeing reduced rainfall affect pasture production. The Bega region in New South Wales is also having a tough season.
