Data-Driven Dairy Management Boosts Yields in Karnataka's Ksheera Project

The Ksheera project, launched six months ago in Karnataka's Vijayapura district, is transforming smallholder dairy operations by replacing traditional methods with data-driven management. This initiative is a collaboration between BLDE Educational Institution and the Akshayakalpa Foundation, supported by a corporate investment of about Rs 2.5 crore over five years.

Originally a pilot scheme in ten rural villages, the project aims to expand across the district, bridging gaps in scientific cattle management knowledge. The project includes local staff selection, awareness drives, and intensive training sessions. Farmers are brought to Tiptur, where Akshayakalpa has developed successful dairy models.

The project's curriculum emphasizes precise nutritional management, countering the belief that excessive feeding enhances milk output. Instead, a balanced 40 kg of fodder per cow daily is recommended, reducing feed waste.

Farmers like Parasappa Ganiger from Kumate village have experienced a 50% increase in milk yields, prompting a shift from teaching to full-time dairying. In Nidoni village, Darshan Kuchanur's production rose from 40 to 60 liters daily, allowing him to expand his operations.

Buoyed by these successes, the project plans to extend its educational framework to more villages. The long-term vision is to curb rural-to-urban migration by showing that scientific livestock management can turn smallholder dairying into a profitable and stable enterprise.
