Danone's Strategic Shift: From Microbiome Investments to Dairy Efficiency
Danone has been actively repositioning itself within the health, functional nutrition, microbiome, and protein sectors through a series of substantial acquisitions. However, at the heart of its strategy, the company continues to rely heavily on dairy production. Recent investments in intestinal health, specialized nutrition, and proteins indicate the direction of Danone's future endeavors, aiming to expand its market presence in categories linked to well-being and functional foods.
The company has acknowledged that the success of this strategy hinges on efficiently and sustainably securing raw materials. Currently, over 60% of the milk used by Danone's Brazilian operations is sourced from farms engaged in regenerative practices. The company has set goals to increase the proportion of ingredients sourced from such farms by 2030.
This initiative aligns with broader objectives that intertwine sustainability, supply security, and production efficiency. Danone's approach involves enhancing productivity on existing farms rather than expanding livestock numbers or increasing farm sizes. The company collects approximately 500,000 liters of milk daily from around 230 rural producers, primarily small-scale farmers.
To support future growth, Danone focuses on technology transfer, farm management improvements, and practices that boost productivity. The 'Jornada Flora' program is central to this effort, promoting regenerative practices, emission reductions, increased farmer income, and animal welfare. Farms that have adopted these technologies reportedly achieve productivity levels well above the national average.
Beyond farm operations, Danone has developed mechanisms to decrease production costs through joint input purchases and has facilitated access to rural credit. Formal supply contracts now serve as a basis for securing financing, with a partnership with Banco do Brasil enhancing available resources for program participants.
These initiatives aim to create a more efficient, resilient dairy supply chain capable of meeting new market demands. Interest in protein-rich products, driven by the rise of GLP-1 class medications associated with weight loss, underscores the growing demand for muscle mass replenishment and well-being categories, areas where Danone seeks growth.
