French multinational Danone has announced the relocation of part of its yogurt production from Spain to Romania, specifically for the production of its protein-rich drinking yogurt brand YoPRO.
This strategic move responds to growing consumer demand for protein-enhanced products, as highlighted by Anca Miron, Head of Dairy Functionals at Danone Central and Eastern Europe. "The local market segment dedicated to protein-rich products is growing," Miron said, underscoring the shift.
With the relocation, Danone’s Bucharest facility will now produce YoPRO for export to key markets including the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia. The Bucharest plant, Danone's most efficient production unit in Europe, boasts an annual production capacity of 75,000 tons of dairy products. It serves not only the Romanian market but also exports to 14 other European countries.
Danone’s operations in Romania have a long history. The company acquired the Miorița dairy factory in Bucharest in 1996 and began yogurt production in 1999 after significant investments in modernization. Today, Danone Romania processes over 60,000 tons of milk annually, sourced from 22 large farms and more than 220 smaller households, reinforcing its commitment to local agriculture.
This expansion positions Danone to capitalize on evolving consumer preferences while strengthening Romania's role as a key hub in its European production network.
