Connecticut Senate Republicans Propose $20 Million Aid for Dairy Farmers
On March 27, 2026, Connecticut Senate Republicans called for Governor Ned Lamont to allocate $20 million from a state-managed contingency fund to support the state's struggling dairy farmers. The initiative seeks to provide financial relief to approximately 80 dairy farms experiencing a sustainability crisis due to low milk prices.
Senate Minority Leader Stephen Harding, representing Wolcott, emphasized the necessity of the aid, highlighting that the proposed legislation aims to offer a $20 million tax credit to sustain local dairy operations. However, the proposal's success hinges on backing from the majority Democrats in the legislature and Governor Lamont's approval.
Harding urged, "We are calling on the governor and the Democrats in the legislature to either implement this tax credit program for our farmers or, if not, allocate funds from the governor's fund to help save them."
Recently, Senate Republicans opposed the creation of the state's federal cuts response fund, arguing its redundancy. Nevertheless, Rob Blanchard, a spokesperson for Governor Lamont, noted a shift in the Republicans' stance, acknowledging the necessity of the fund in light of economic impacts attributed to previous federal administration policies.
