Concerns Over Energy Costs and Mental Health Arise at Farming Show

At the annual Royal Bath and West Show, farmers voiced significant concerns regarding the future of the industry, particularly focusing on energy costs and mental health. The event, expected to attract thousands, highlighted the challenges faced by farmers in a year described as 'strange' due to various global and environmental factors.

Richard Clothier, managing director of Wyke Farms, emphasized the importance of energy and food security, stating, 'With climate change and the other geopolitical challenges around the world, food security can't be taken for granted any more.' He pointed out the parallels between energy and food security, noting the impact of disruptions.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran since March has exacerbated these concerns, affecting the price of fertilizers and oil, with about 30% of the world's fertilizer chemicals and 20% of the oil passing through the area. This situation has led to increased costs felt by British farmers.

Jeremy Moody, from the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers, highlighted the decline in domestic food production, falling from over 70% to below 60%, raising questions about self-sufficiency in unstable international conditions.

Climate change has further compounded these issues. The hottest late May Bank Holiday on record and last summer's droughts have caused significant disruptions. David Cotton, chairman of the Dairy Show, mentioned the unusual weather patterns affecting crop management and the timing of agricultural activities.

Mental health was another critical issue discussed at the show. Maureen Trott, a farmer and chief livestock steward, noted the increasing number of calls to the Farming Community Network helpline, primarily related to financial worries and mental well-being. Trott emphasized the importance of understanding and support from fellow farmers, which is often lacking in traditional medical and counseling services.

The Royal Bath and West Show continues until May 30, providing a platform for farmers to address these pressing issues and seek potential solutions.
