In a significant move, China has imported 1,600 high-quality dairy sheep fr om New Zealand, specifically the Southern Cross breed, renowned for its exceptional milk yields and milk quality. The sheep arrived in Lanzhou City, northwest China, via a dedicated cargo plane and will undergo a 45-day quarantine near Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport.
Developed by New Zealand's Maui Food Group, the Southern Cross dairy sheep represent a milestone in crossbreeding efforts. The breed's distinctive feature is its ability to produce milk for up to 240 days per year. Each sheep is capable of yielding an impressive 600 to 700 liters of milk annually.
Post-quarantine, the imported sheep will be transported to Tangshan City, Hebei Province, wh ere they will contribute significantly to the production of fresh milk, milk powder, cheese, and yogurt. This initiative marks China's first-ever import of Southern Cross dairy sheep, indicating a strategic move to enhance its dairy production capabilities.
