Challenges and Costs of Dairy Cattle Confinement in Brazil

The practice of confining dairy cattle in Brazil has seen a rise in adoption as farmers aim to enhance productivity and control environmental factors. Systems such as compost barns and free stalls are becoming standard in many farms, shifting from being the exception to the norm.

According to data from the Campo Futuro Project, conducted by Cepea/Esalq-USP with the CNA/Senar System, investments in confined systems can range between R$ 64,000 and R$ 133,000 per dairy cow, excluding land costs. This high investment is largely allocated to physical structures, which constitute 44.4% of the total, followed by the herd at 30.2%, and machinery and equipment at 19%.

The compost barn model is the most prevalent, where cows rest on an organic bedding that is turned daily to keep the environment dry and comfortable. The average cost for the barn structure alone is R$ 16,493.72 per lactating cow.

Confinement systems offer several advantages, including reduced dependency on climatic conditions such as droughts and excessive rainfall, enhanced nutritional control, and easier health monitoring. They also allow for increased production without the need for proportionally larger land areas.

However, productivity gains do not automatically translate into profitability. Financial returns are closely linked to efficient management. The capital turnover rate varies from 16.7% to 34.8%, indicating varying levels of success in converting investment into revenue across different farms.

A critical factor for confined systems is maintaining about 45% of cows in lactation. If this percentage decreases, costs remain while revenue drops, underscoring the importance of effective herd management.

Experts emphasize that the success of confinement systems relies on a combination of genetics, management, cost control, and financial discipline. As the dairy sector becomes more professionalized, making the right investments is as crucial as increasing milk production.
