California Dairy Council Highlights Its Statewide Industry Impact
The state of California is often celebrated for its significant contributions to the dairy industry, with many acknowledging the efforts led by the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB). As an entity of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, CMAB's mission is to promote an array of dairy products made exclusively with 100% Californian cow milk.
Impressive Historical Background
California is home to more than 1,300 dairy families, with a whopping 99% operating as family-owned businesses. Since 1993, California has been responsible for producing 18.5% of the entire U.S. milk production, as well as over one million tons of cheese, according to 2017 data. Among its cheese varieties, California stands out as a leader in producing Monterey Jack cheese—a cheese that traces its origins back to the Franciscan friars of the 18th century and the entrepreneurial David Jacks.
Leading in Sustainability
California's dairy producers recognize the weight of their historical and traditional position, which has prompted increased investments in environmentally-friendly initiatives aimed at securing a sustainable future by 2030. Notably, one project targets a 40% reduction in methane emissions from manure by capturing these gases in digesters, turning them into clean energy. Such efforts reflect a dramatic decrease of over 88% in the water footprint required for a glass of California milk compared to 50 years ago.
Products embracing the 'Real California Milk' seal showcase California's rich dairy tradition and the producers’ commitment to making food products that benefit people, the planet, and future generations.
