Bulgarian Dairy Sector Faces Crisis with Plummeting Milk Prices
The Bulgarian dairy sector is experiencing a critical situation as raw milk prices have sharply decreased, threatening the financial stability of local farmers. Acting Agriculture and Food Minister Ivan Hristanov highlighted the urgency of the issue, revealing that in Northern Bulgaria, the purchase price of milk has fallen below 33 euro cents per liter, making it challenging for farmers to maintain production.
Hristanov pointed out the paradox of having the lowest purchase prices in Europe while Bulgarian consumers face some of the highest prices for dairy products. This market distortion has led the government to implement emergency measures, including comprehensive border inspections on all dairy imports to ensure quality and fairness for local producers.
Under the new directive by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, authorities will scrutinize dairy imports for substitutes, antibiotics, and pesticide residues. These inspections aim to protect consumers and support Bulgarian farmers by ensuring that imported products meet national standards.
Hristanov recalled that similar measures were taken in 2022, which had previously helped stabilize prices. The government is committed to using its remaining time in office to address this crisis and prevent further closures of dairy farms.
Despite the dire circumstances, the Minister urged farmers not to abandon the industry, promising that support measures are underway to protect Bulgarian dairy production.
