Buffalo Innovation Drives Paraguay's Dairy Sector Forward
In Paraguay, a groundbreaking shift in dairy production is unfolding with the advent of high-genetic buffalo breeding. Unlike traditional Paraguayan dairy farming, predominantly focused on cattle, this new approach is carving out a niche market for premium products such as mozzarella and dulce de leche, prized for their nutritional value and quality.

The pivotal moment for this transformation was showcased at Expo Paraguay 2025, where for the first time, pedigree buffalo met international judging standards, reflecting the sector's leap towards quality and professionalism. This initiative is driven by the Paraguayan Association of Buffalo Breeders, under the leadership of Bruno Garelli, focusing on genetic improvement through selective breeding programs.

The sector's growth is materializing into diverse dairy offerings. At the Expo, a buffalo milk processing industry unveiled a range of premium dairy products targeting local markets keen on quality alternatives. Despite the growth, challenges persist; notably, breeders' reluctance to sell high-genetic animals. To address this, an October fair will offer 300 selected animals, including high-bred pregnant females, aiming to expand producer access and establish new buffalo herds across the nation.

This strategic focus on innovation and quality highlights Paraguay's potential for agricultural diversification, setting the stage for buffalo milk to become a significant player in the country's dairy landscape.
