Bihar Cabinet Greenlights Major Dairy Expansion With Five New Plants
The government of Bihar has given the nod to set up five new dairy plants, including two milk powder processing units, with a total budget of ₹316 crore. Driven by the aim to leverage the state's dairy potential, enhance milk supply, and generate local employment opportunities, this initiative marks a significant investment in the region's dairy infrastructure. Additional Chief Secretary S. Siddharth of the Cabinet Secretariat Department elaborated that the proposal, processed under the Animal and Fish Resources Department, is backed by a loan from the SIDBI Cluster Development Fund (SCDF).

The new setup includes two dairy plants in Darbhanga and Wazirganj (Gaya), each with a processing capacity of 2 lakh litres per day and an investment of ₹71.32 crore in Darbhanga and ₹50.27 crore in Gaya. Another plant, planned for Gopalganj, will handle 1 lakh litres per day, necessitating ₹54.73 crore. Additionally, two milk powder plants, each capable of processing 30 metric tonnes per day, will be established in Dehri-on-Sone (Rohtas) and Sitamarhi, with respective costs of ₹69.66 crore and ₹70.33 crore. "These plants will help ensure a steady supply of quality milk to consumers, strengthen the dairy infrastructure in Bihar, and create employment opportunities," Siddharth stated. The decision aligns with a broader push to develop India's dairy sector, reinforcing cooperatives and enhancing rural livelihoods through boosted dairy processing capacity.
