Baladna Algeria Initiates Dairy Cattle Import from the US for $635 Million Project

Baladna Algeria has officially launched the second phase of its ambitious integrated farm project with the signing of contracts worth over $635 million. This phase, which includes the importation of 30,000 dairy cows from the United States, is a significant step towards establishing local powdered milk production capabilities in Algeria. The project, with an estimated total investment of $3.5 billion, aims to significantly boost the country's dairy production capacity.

The import program is set to begin in November 2026 and will involve 109 flights over a ten-month period, with each flight carrying approximately 300 cows. These cattle will be sourced from nine U.S. states, including Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, among others. The initiative is expected to create significant economic impact in the United States, potentially generating around 1,200 jobs.

The signing ceremony was attended by key figures, including Algeria's Minister of Agriculture, Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, and representatives from Baladna and partner companies. Agreements were signed with leading firms like HUNLAND and SCARFF BROS., which will supply Holstein Friesian dairy cattle, and VALMONT, specializing in irrigation systems.

This phase will also encompass civil works, construction of additional facilities, and the development of infrastructure necessary for the project's success. Notably, seven out of the ten companies involved are Algerian, emphasizing the project’s commitment to local value creation.

Baladna aims to reach a herd of 270,000 dairy cows, which could supply up to 50% of Algeria’s powdered milk demand. The project is projected to generate over 15,000 jobs in Algeria, enhancing the local economy and labor market. Baladna's Chairman, Moutaz Al Khayyat, highlighted the project's strategic importance in supporting Algeria’s food security and local production goals.
