Asturias Allocates €200,000 to Support Milk Collection in Mountain Areas

The Government of the Principality of Asturias has introduced a financial support program for the second consecutive year, aimed at ensuring the collection of milk from livestock farms located in mountainous areas. The initiative comes with a budget allocation of €200,000, intended to compensate for the higher logistical costs that first buyers encounter when operating in remote and difficult-to-access regions.

This measure is designed to prevent these additional costs from reducing the prices received by producers and to support the continuity of livestock farming in areas significantly affected by depopulation. The financial aid targets first buyers of milk collecting production from cattle, sheep, and goat farms situated in mountainous municipalities within the Principality.

The application period for this funding will remain open until August 3, 2026. The government of Asturias has noted that collecting milk in these regions poses greater challenges due to the dispersion of farms, the distance to processing plants, complex access routes, steep slopes, and adverse weather conditions. These factors significantly increase service costs and could jeopardize the sustainability of operations for some farms.

Eligibility for the subsidy requires first buyers to be registered with Infolac and Letra Q and to have maintained milk collection contracts during 2025 with producers in mountainous municipalities. The service must have been provided throughout the duration of these contracts.

The subsidy will be calculated as an annual premium of €500 per point, with a maximum of 300 points per beneficiary. Points are allocated based on various criteria, including three points for cooperatives or Agricultural Transformation Societies (SAT), two points for each producer collecting up to 100,000 liters annually, and one point for each producer delivering more than 100,000 liters and up to 200,000 liters per year.

Through this measure, Asturias aims to ensure the ongoing collection of milk in mountainous areas and to preserve livestock farming activities in regions facing greater operational difficulties.
