Arla's Hesitation Complicates Future for EKABE Dairy Farmers in Luxembourg

As the future of EKABE dairy farms in Luxembourg hangs in the balance, the cooperative Arla is cautious about swiftly incorporating these farmers into its operations. Arla, which processes approximately 19.4 billion kilograms of milk annually, is seen as a potential buyer but faces logistical and organizational challenges in integrating new members quickly.

The Prolek cooperative, representing the affected farmers, is on the lookout for alternative partnerships, with companies like Luxlait and Hochwald also mentioned as potential buyers. However, Luxlait has expressed concerns about absorbing an additional 50 million litres of milk per year due to market limitations.

Alain Schaack, president of Luxembourg's Arla farmers, stated that while Arla has the processing capacity, it cannot expedite the admission of new members due to the cooperative's internal priorities and processes. Integrating new members is expected to take around a year.

This situation arises as Lactalis, a major player in the dairy sector, cited an oversupply of milk leading to lower prices, with prices in Luxembourg at approximately €0.40 per litre as of April. Schaack contests the notion of market oversaturation, pointing to a steady global demand increase by 1 to 2% annually.

Lactalis's strategic focus is shifting towards regions like Australia and parts of Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, where production conditions are perceived as more favorable. This move reflects a broader trend in the industry, challenging the existing global competition model and emphasizing regional consumer-producer networks.

Raymond Aendekerk of the NGO Meng Landwirtschaft advocates for strengthening local agricultural networks and consumer support for domestic products. He highlights initiatives like the Leader programmes and national brands as examples of effective local collaboration.

While Luxembourg's farmers face immediate pressures, Aendekerk underscores that farmers in the Global South encounter harsher impacts from global agricultural competition, a concern that often remains underrepresented in European discussions.
