Arla Foods is investing €34.5m in its Jönköping dairy to begin skyr production, aiming to meet growing demand in Sweden by 2028.

Arla Foods is set to begin skyr production in Sweden with a substantial €34.5m investment in its Jönköping dairy facility. This strategic move aims to respond to Sweden's increasing demand for the Icelandic-style yogurt, with production slated to commence in the first quarter of 2028. Currently, Jönköping's dairy produces over 280 dairy products and employs approximately 290 staff.
Despite no immediate job creation, the investment may secure long-term employment and leverage Arla's expertise in protein-rich products, as stated by David Boulanger, Arla's Supply Chain VP. Skyr, a popular dairy item known for its high protein content, was previously manufactured by Arla only in Denmark, Germany, and Finland. The expansion to Sweden aligns with Arla's sustainability goals and consumer demands.
Additionally, Arla plans further growth through a merger with Germany's DMK Group, forming Europe's largest dairy cooperative, despite challenging market conditions influencing revenue and volume metrics. Arla projects revenues between €14.5bn and €15.3bn in 2025, indicating resilience amid uncertain consumer markets.
