Alert in Morelos: Avoid Raw Milk Due to Brucellosis Outbreaks
Authorities in the Morelos region have reported outbreaks of brucellosis and tuberculosis in cattle, particularly in municipalities like Tlaltizapán, Miacatlán, Axochiapan, and Tlaquiltenango. Mario Ocampo, the Health Secretary, emphasized avoiding the consumption of 'leche bronca'—raw milk—due to the direct risk of bacterial transmission. Despite no reported human cases of brucellosis in the area, medical institutions, in collaboration with the Secretariat of Agricultural Development (Sedagro), are working on preventative measures.

Brucellosis is caused by Brucella bacteria and can be transmitted to humans through unpasteurized milk and dairy products, manifesting symptoms such as fever and dizziness. Health authorities reinforce sanitary monitoring and awareness campaigns to promote safe consumption practices, including opting for pasteurized products and maintaining hygiene in domestic handling. Experts advocate for periodic serological testing of livestock, enhanced vaccination, and educational outreach to curb zoonotic transmission.
