Young Farmers Showcase Skills at Melplash Competition
The Melplash Agricultural Society hosted its annual Young Farmers Stock Judging Competition at Childhay Organic Dairy, benefiting from the hospitality of hosts Steve and Sonia Raymond. The event saw participation from eight teams, representing Young Farmers Clubs from Beaminster, Crewkerne, Ilminster, Marshwood Vale, Polden Hills, Puddletown, and Wedmore.
Peter Hardwill, the president of the Melplash Agricultural Society for 2026, emphasized the significance of the competition in supporting the future of dairy farming in the area. He stated, "The competition is an important event in the Melplash Agricultural Society calendar and helps support the future of dairy farming in the area."
During the competition, junior competitors evaluated four cows while intermediate and senior participants assessed six, focusing on traits like strong legs, smooth movement, and well-attached udders. Stuart Perry from Honiton judged the competition.
In the junior category, Emily Tucker and Ella Crossman secured first place, winning the Melplash Agricultural Society Junior Shield. Jacob and George Tucker came in second, while Amy Groves and Grace House took third place.
The intermediate division was won by Tia Groves and Sophie Raymond from Beaminster YFC, who were awarded the Melplash Agricultural Society Shield. Zoe Stanbury and Grace Willcox topped the senior category, claiming the Francis W Hunt Trophy.
Amy Groves was recognized as the best newcomer, and Zoe Stanbury received the award for the highest placed individual, further highlighting the talent among the young farmers.
