A new outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has been registered in Mongolia after almost three years. According to the World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS) report dated September 4, 2025, the disease was identified at a farm in the Ulziin Khayalga area in the eastern part of the country.

According to the OIE, since the outbreak began, 10 sheep have fallen ill, one has died, and another 10 animals have been culled. To prevent the spread of the infection, approximately 19,000 animals in the risk zone are planned to be vaccinated.

Quarantine has been imposed on the farm and surrounding areas, movement of livestock is being controlled, and disinfection is underway.

The last case of foot-and-mouth disease in Mongolia was recorded in October 2022. The virus belongs to serotype O, one of the most common forms of the disease, posing a threat to both large and small livestock.

Amid the situation in Mongolia, a new outbreak of anthrax has been detected in Romania. This is also reported by WAHIS in the September 4 report. This is the first case of the disease in the country since September 2023. Details on the number of affected animals and measures being taken have not yet been disclosed.

Experts note that the return of foot-and-mouth disease to Mongolia could increase risks for neighboring Central Asian countries, considering the active movement of livestock and trade in agricultural products.
