Wisconsin Cheesemakers Laud Governor Evers' Dairy Budget Initiatives

Wisconsin Cheesemakers Applaud Budget Allocations
Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA) members voiced strong support for Governor Tony Evers' initiative to bolster the dairy sector through profound budget investments. The Governor's budget proposal focuses on advancing dairy innovation, boosting agricultural exports, ensuring food security, and refining rural infrastructure. It also seeks to bring clarity in food labeling practices.
Investment in Export and Innovation
Key elements of Evers' proposal include funding for a full-time position dedicated to the Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports, aiming to strengthen dairy, crop, and meat sales overseas. The initiative, since its inception in 2021, has increased Wisconsin's agricultural exports by 5.3%. Furthermore, $1.2 million is allocated for the Dairy Processor Grant program to support dairy businesses in modernization and innovation efforts.
Support for Local Producers
The budget includes substantial allocations across various supportive programs: $30 million towards the Food Security Initiative, over $768,000 for the Local Food Purchasing Assistance Program, and $400,000 each for the Something Special from Wisconsin and the new Farm to Fork Grant Program. Additionally, annual funding of $600,000 is designated for the Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin program.
Consumer Clarity and Rural Development
Governor Evers also proposes stringent enforcement against the misleading labeling of non-dairy products to be labeled as milk. The budget emphasizes on refining rural infrastructure, addressing workforce necessities, and enhancing vocational training avenues.
"Governor Evers' proposal prioritizes Wisconsin's cornerstone dairy industry and rural communities, creating opportunities for dairy processors to recruit skilled workers and expand their businesses," said Rebekah Sweeney, WCMA Senior Director of Programs & Policy.
