Wisconsin Celebrates National Dairy Month with Local Traditions
In June, Wisconsin commemorates National Dairy Month, a time to recognize the state's rich dairy heritage. Leading the celebrations is Sarah Hagenow, Wisconsin's 78th 'Alice in Dairyland'. She emphasizes the significant role of family-owned dairy farms, which constitute 99% of the state's dairy industry, in providing high-quality products globally.
Hagenow notes that many of these farms have been operated by multiple generations, while some are newly established by first-generation farmers. According to her, these families blend tradition with innovation, maintaining a commitment to land, animal, and community care.
Highlighting Wisconsin's global reputation, Hagenow states that the state sets the standard for dairy quality, craftsmanship, and innovation. She encourages residents to try new recipes featuring local dairy ingredients, such as a grilled feta and watermelon salad.
To support local farmers, Hagenow suggests consumers look for the 'Proudly Wisconsin' cheese and dairy badges when purchasing products. These labels signify genuine Wisconsin products, helping sustain the local farming community.
National Dairy Month serves as a reminder of the dedication and pride inherent in Wisconsin's dairy farming practices, showcasing the state's impact on the dairy industry both locally and globally.
