Wisconsin Dairy Gets $3.2M Boost: Export Power Surge!

The Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA) is celebrating a pivotal decision by the Joint Finance Committee, which has allocated a substantial $3.2 million in funding to significantly bolster Wisconsin’s vital dairy industry. This strategic financial injection is designed to reinforce the state’s already strong position as a global leader in agricultural exports and dairy innovation. It directly addresses critical challenges such as market volatility, supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and biosecurity threats, benefiting the broader agribusiness landscape.

A significant portion of this funding, specifically $1 million annually for the 2025-27 biennium, is earmarked for the highly impactful Wisconsin Initiative on Agricultural Exports (WIAE). Launched in 2021, the WIAE has already demonstrated impressive results, with Wisconsin dairy exports experiencing a remarkable surge of 23.82 percent in 2024, exceeding $406 million. This continued funding will facilitate crucial trade missions, host international buyer visits, and support export readiness programs, directly enhancing Wisconsin’s global competitiveness.

Furthermore, the Joint Finance Committee has increased its commitment to the Dairy Processor Grant Program by an additional $400,000, elevating the total support to $1.2 million over the biennium. These grants are indispensable for small and medium-sized dairy processors, enabling them to undertake critical modernization efforts. Improvements in automation, energy efficiency, food safety, and worker safety are all made possible through these grants, ensuring milk production facilities remain cutting-edge.

The modernization facilitated by these grants plays a crucial role in supporting job retention and creation across Wisconsin’s dairy sector. By empowering processors to update their operations, the funding contributes directly to their long-term competitiveness in a dynamic market. This strategic investment underscores a commitment to fostering a resilient and future-ready dairy infrastructure, impacting dairy economics positively.

The WCMA specifically commended key legislative champions, including Representatives Tony Kurtz and Todd Novak, and Senator Eric Wimberger. Their dedicated advocacy was instrumental in securing these crucial funding measures, demonstrating effective collaboration between industry associations and policymakers to drive economic growth and ensure the sustained prosperity of Wisconsin’s renowned dairy businesses.
