Welshpool Farmers Lead Record Cattle Sale at Shrewsbury

At the Shrewsbury Auction Centre, Welshpool dairy farmers set a new benchmark for cattle prices, with top-quality animals fetching up to £3,750. This peak was reached during a sale that featured a standout consignment from the Uppersevern herd, managed by J.E. Thomas & Son of Gwyns Barn, Welshpool.

On July 28, auctioneer and manager Jonny Dymond described the event as one of the strongest sales he had witnessed, highlighting the exceptional quality of the cattle. Fresh heifers led the market at £3,750, while cows reached a maximum of £3,500.

The star sale of the event was Uppersevern August Nina, a heifer that sold for £3,750. Close on its heels was Uppersevern Elevated Nicola, which sold for £3,700. Several other heifers from the Uppersevern herd were sold for prices ranging between £3,350 and £3,650.

The Thomas family also achieved top prices in the cow section, with Uppersevern Honor Racheal 2 VG85, a second-lactation cow producing 50kg of milk daily, fetching £3,500. Three additional cows from the herd were sold for £3,300 or more, showcasing the exceptional quality of Welshpool cattle.

Overall, 35 fresh cows and heifers were sold for £3,000 or more, with fresh heifers averaging £3,032 and fresh cows averaging £2,655. In-calf heifers reached up to £2,880, averaging £2,562 across the board. The sale included breeding bulls, with a four-year-old Hereford stock bull selling for a top price of £2,900.
