Vermont Dairy Industry’s Economic Boom: A Detailed Insight

The Vermont dairy industry has shown remarkable growth, according to the newly released "Vermont Dairy Delivers" report. This report was unveiled by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets, highlighting the current and critical contributions of dairy farmers and processors to the state's economy.

The industry's economic impact is now valued at $5.4 billion annually as opposed to $2.6 billion a decade ago. This upsurge is attributed to the steadfast efforts of Vermont’s dairy farmers, producers, and processors, along with an increase in dairy exports globally. Vermont currently boasts 158 dairy processors, a significant rise from 95 just ten years prior.

In 2023, American dairy consumption hit an historic high, with the average American consuming 661 pounds of dairy annually, marking an increase of over 40 pounds from previous decades. Vermont accounts for 63% of New England's fluid milk production.

Environmental stewardship also plays a significant role in Vermont’s dairy sector, with the Cow Power Program capturing 73,000 tons of methane, showcasing the industry’s dedication to environmental quality and sustainable practices.

Anson Tebbetts, Vermont's Secretary of Agriculture, commended the relentless efforts of various stakeholders in the dairy industry. The report, commissioned by the Vermont Dairy Promotion Council, underscores Vermont’s dairy industry's pivotal role in both economic vitality and environmental sustainability.
