Uttar Pradesh Government Plans to Revitalize Defunct Gorakhpur Dairy Plant

The defunct Parag Dairy unit in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, is set for a significant revitalization, targeted for completion by February 2026. This initiative was announced by Dharampal Singh, the state's Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, who criticized the previous Samajwadi Party government for the plant's closure due to negligence.

The revival of the Gorakhpur plant is a key part of the Yogi Adityanath government's strategy to boost the cooperative dairy sector, benefiting local farmers and milk producers. The facility, which has been non-operational since 2023, boasts a processing capacity of over one lakh litres per day. Its revival is expected to create economic opportunities and restore confidence among cooperative dairy societies in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The plant's operations will be managed by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), which is conducting a technical assessment and coordinating with cooperative societies to ensure a smooth restart. The necessary infrastructural upgrades are scheduled for completion soon.

A critical deadline has been set for resuming milk procurement before the next financial year, reassuring local dairy farmers of a stable market for their products. This effort reflects the political commitment to addressing past failures and rejuvenating an essential regional processing hub.

Additionally, Minister Singh highlighted the broader commitment to animal welfare and the dairy industry, noting the operation of 7,713 cow shelters housing over 12.50 lakh cows, with 171 large cow shelters under construction.
