US Dairy Trade Concerns Highlighted in USMCA Review Process

The leader of Farmers for Free Trade, Brian Kuehl, has highlighted ongoing challenges faced by the U.S. dairy industry in accessing Canadian markets, despite the trade frameworks established under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Kuehl, speaking at a panel discussion in Wisconsin, pointed out that Canadian tariff rate quotas are not being administered as agreed, limiting U.S. dairy exports.

According to Kuehl, Canada's supply management system, which governs the production and importation of dairy products, poses significant barriers. While a quota was agreed upon for U.S. dairy products, he claims that Canadian processors, who control these quotas, have not adhered to the commitments, effectively limiting market access for U.S. products.

The USMCA, enacted to facilitate trade between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, is set for a review starting July 1st. This review will determine whether the agreement will be extended for another decade or potentially for up to sixteen years. All three nations involved must vote on the continuation of the agreement.

The situation has led to increased calls from groups like Farmers for Free Trade for improvements in how the USMCA is implemented, particularly concerning dairy market access. Kuehl expressed hope that the upcoming review could lead to positive changes in the trade dynamics.
