Uruguayan Dairy Producers Reject Brazilian Dumping Allegations
Uruguayan dairy associations have taken a firm stance against rising trade tensions with Brazil by sending a formal letter to the Brazilian ambassador in Montevideo. The letter aims to categorically refute allegations of dumping practices in Uruguayan dairy exports, emphasizing that these claims lack technical support and are attempts to create artificial barriers in a crucial Mercosur trade channel.
The letter highlights that the competitiveness of products such as milk powder and cheese is due to the efficiency of Uruguay's production model, not unfair pricing strategies. This issue arises as some Brazilian industry sectors push for restrictions on foreign goods, claiming harm to local production. Uruguay, however, maintains that its market operations are transparent and comply with regional trade regulations.
For Uruguayan industrial plants and production units, Brazil is a strategic market that absorbs a significant portion of their exportable surplus. Any disruption or limitation in this trade flow would directly impact the profitability of these establishments. Therefore, the associations urge continued diplomatic and technical dialogue to prevent particular interests from distorting intra-bloc free trade. The Uruguayan dairy sector reaffirms its commitment to quality and free competition, key factors that have established it as a reliable international supplier.
