Uruguay Enters Indonesian Dairy Market Amid Growing Demand

Uruguay has successfully started exporting dairy products to Indonesia, which is becoming an increasingly significant market for dairy exporters. This development comes as Indonesia seeks to diversify its supply sources in response to a government milk distribution program led by President Prabowo Subianto. The program aims to benefit 82 million individuals daily by 2029, with a particular focus on children and pregnant women.

To meet the goals of this initiative, Indonesia is expected to increase its imports significantly. Projections indicate that by 2025, Indonesia will import an additional 93,000 metric tons of skimmed milk powder, marking a 43% increase from the previous year. This uptick in demand represents a considerable opportunity for dairy exporters, including Uruguay.

Besides skimmed milk powder, Indonesia's market also shows potential in high-value segments, such as infant formula. The infant formula market is estimated to reach $3.7 billion by 2024, with further growth anticipated, reaching nearly $5 billion by 2032. This growth is driven by Indonesia's demographic trends, with approximately 4.5 million births recorded annually.

Despite these opportunities, Uruguay faces stiff competition from established suppliers like New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, which benefit from tariff advantages. As a result, building strong trade relationships and expanding market presence are crucial for Uruguay to secure its position in this competitive Southeast Asian market.

The first shipments from Uruguay have already been dispatched, and a trade mission is planned in the coming months to further solidify this new trade route. The Indonesian market, now a pivotal point for Uruguay's dairy exports, represents a significant step in diversifying away from traditional markets.
