Uruguay's cheese production in 2023 increased by 14% to 64,636 tons of cheese
On March 27th, known as International Cheese Day, Uruguay celebrates the prominent role of cheese within its dairy exports. According to the Instituto Nacional de la Leche (Inale) and the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries (MGAP), cheese stands as the second most industrialized dairy product in Uruguay and plays a crucial role in agro-industrial exports.

In 2023, Uruguay produced 64,636 tons of cheese, marking a 14% increase from the previous year. Cheese outshines other dairy products such as cheese whey powder, dulce de leche, and others in production volumes.

In terms of exports in 2024, Uruguay shipped 21,497 tons of cheese, earning $105.3 million, placing it second only to whole milk powder. Cheese is not only a nutritional asset, rich in proteins and containing vital nutrients like calcium and potassium, but it is also culturally significant. This century-old tradition sees cheese as more than just an edible delight but a legacy passed from generation to generation by local producers.

Cheese's economic impact extends to rural employment and highlights the importance of choosing high-quality cheese, as demonstrated in Uruguay's rich selection, including Colonia, Danbo, and Semi-hard varieties.
