Ukraine is optimistic about increasing its exports of peas, poultry meat, and animal feed, with expectations that China may open its market as soon as 2025, according to the Ukrainian Agricultural Producers Union (UAC).
The Ukrainian state food safety authority indicated last week that the country is actively seeking approval from Beijing to export peas, poultry, animal feed, and other agricultural products to China.
As a major global producer of grain, vegetable oils, and other agricultural goods, Ukraine’s exports are critical to its economy. UAC reported that negotiations with Chinese authorities are progressing, and there is a possibility that China could begin importing Ukrainian peas as early as January 1, 2025.
"This would be a significant milestone for Ukrainian producers, providing a major boost to exports," UAC said in a statement.
Ukraine has recently completed its 2024 pea harvest, with a total of 470,200 tons of peas threshed, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture. Analysts predict that Ukraine could export approximately 400,000 tons of peas in the 2024/25 marketing year (July-June), up from 314,000 tons in 2023/24, driven by the larger harvest.
