August has seen a rise in milk prices across several major UK processors, reflecting a positive trend in the global dairy market. German processor Müller has increased its price by 1p per liter (ppl), bringing the total to 39ppl for their farmer suppliers. This move aligns with the continuing upward adjustments seen in July.
First Milk has also announced an increase in their member milk price to 41.0ppl, up by 0.7ppl from July's rate. Mike Smith, First Milk vice chair and farmer director, noted the stabilization of global dairy market prices and ongoing farm-level challenges such as unpredictable weather impacting forage availability. "We are pleased to announce this increase to our milk price at this time," Smith stated, acknowledging the tough conditions faced by members.
Organic Herd, a British farmer-owned cooperative, reported a significant price increase of 3ppl, following a 1ppl hike in July. This adjustment brings their payment for a standard liter to an impressive 54ppl, substantially higher than conventional milk rates. Martyn Anthony, Chief Executive of Organic Herd, explained that the increase is due to strengthening demand for organic dairy in both domestic and major export markets, amidst easing food price inflation and growing consumer interest in sustainable food production.
Arla also raised its prices, with the on-account price for conventional milk going up by 0.74ppl to 42.44ppl and organic milk increasing by the same amount to 53.31ppl. Arthur Fearnall, Arla Foods amba board director and Arla farmer, commented on the market's stability, noting, "Global milk supplies continue to be stable while retail sales continue to grow, albeit at a slower pace."
