The restricted zone has been extended to cover a total of 19 counties and one city authority across England, including Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and parts of Berkshire, East Sussex, and Hampshire, among others. Additionally, two cases have been confirmed in Wales, involving animals imported from England, although no restricted zones are currently in place in Wales.

Farmers within these zones must adhere to strict movement restrictions for animals and germinal products. Animal movement out of the zone requires a specific license, while a general license allows transfers to designated abattoirs. Movements within the restricted areas, however, remain permissible.

Defra Secretary Steve Reed emphasized the government's commitment to containing the disease's spread and urged adherence to the restrictions: “We understand the impact of these restrictions and stress their importance in preventing further spread of bluetongue across England and Great Britain.”

Sascha Van Helvoort, APHA's head of field delivery, highlighted the essential role of vigilance in combating the bluetongue virus. She encouraged livestock keepers to promptly report any suspected cases, underscoring that field teams and veterinary professionals are ready to support farmers.

This follows the first bluetongue case confirmed this summer in the UK—a sheep on a Norfolk farm in late August.
