UK Dairy Farmers Prioritize High Milk Solids in Breeding Choices
In the latest April 2026 rankings released by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), Peak Powerhouse has been named the leading Holstein sire, boasting a Profitable Lifetime Index (£PLI) of £768. This ranking highlights the ongoing emphasis on high milk solids output among UK dairy farmers. Daughters of Peak Powerhouse are predicted to yield 1,111 kg of milk and 98 kg of combined fat and protein.
Close contender Genosource Captain retains second place, supported by a significant number of milking daughters in the UK. His attributes include consistent performance, strong feed efficiency, and health traits, which make him a reliable choice for dairy producers looking for stable returns.
Other notable sires include OCD Trooper Sheepster and SDG-PH Delux Dominance, ranking third and fourth respectively, both known for their high milk solids and well-rounded performance.
As new sires emerge, they offer a broader range of traits. For instance, Denovo 18514 Orchard combines strong milk output with better mobility, while Plain-Knoll Renegad Trooper is noted for longevity and health, with daughters expected to remain productive longer.
Marco Winters, head of animal genetics at AHDB, commented on the balance between established and newer sires, acknowledging the proven sires' capability in delivering production gains. Winters emphasized that while newer genetics advance in health and efficiency, the proven sires continue to have an immediate impact on production, visible in the bulk tank.
The report suggests that UK dairy farmers are likely to continue balancing reliability with innovation to enhance both profitability and environmental performance in their breeding strategies.
