UK Dairy and Sheep Meat Exporters Target Middle East and North Africa Markets
The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has highlighted the increasing opportunities for UK dairy and sheep meat exporters in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. With the region projected to become the world's second-largest net importer of food by 2034, the demand for premium lamb and dairy products is on the rise.
Jonathan Eckley, AHDB's international trade development director, emphasized the importance of market intelligence in supporting UK exporters. He noted the high consumption of sheep meat in Gulf markets and anticipated further growth over the next eight years. The AHDB is actively working with industry and government to maximize these opportunities.
Lucy Randolph, head of international trade development for dairy at AHDB, identified the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as the second-largest export market for UK dairy products outside Europe. The demand for British cheese, particularly Cheddar, has seen a steady increase in Saudi Arabia and the UAE since the beginning of the decade.
AHDB's participation in Gulfood, one of the world's largest food trade shows held in Dubai, played a significant role in connecting UK exporters with buyers. The organization supported several red meat and dairy businesses, facilitating direct access to new market opportunities.
The AHDB also organized a dairy breakfast event showcasing British products and collaborated on a dairy promotion in Kuwait with Lulu Hypermarket Kuwait and the Department for Business and Trade.
Eckley stated that such events are crucial for transforming market insights into commercial opportunities, providing a platform for UK produce and fostering relationships essential for export trade growth.
