Donald Trump's ambition to expand U.S. farm goods exports to Europe faces challenges, including market and political obstacles.
Trump's Push for Europe to Buy U.S. Farm Goods Faces Significant Barriers

Donald Trump, noted for his mercantilist policies, strives to reduce the European Union's trade surplus with the U.S., currently at €198 billion. His approach includes demands for the EU to increase imports of American cars, fuels, and food among others.

The EU can potentially accommodate some of Trump's demands by lowering tariffs on imported automobiles and adjusting oil and pharmaceutical imports. However, the import of U.S. food products encounters substantial obstacles such as European culinary preferences and stringent phytosanitary standards.

Europe's strict food safety regulations, based on the precautionary principle, differ significantly from the U.S., which uses a risk-based system. Products like hormone-treated beef and genetically modified crops face heavy restrictions in the EU, making increased imports of these goods a contentious issue.

The EU's internal politics, including recent farmer protests against foreign competition, further complicate matters. Imports of U.S. agricultural products could incite political backlash in key EU member states facing their own electoral challenges.

Unless Trump opts for unconventional strategies, such as significantly increasing U.S. military presence in Europe, achieving agricultural trade parity remains unlikely under current conditions.
