In the heart of Colombia's cattle farming region, a story of resilience and success unfolds in the municipality of Tesalia, Huila. Through the Asociación de Pequeños Productores de Tesalia (Asopegate), a group of 28 families has demonstrated that cooperation is key to rural transformation. This model story is built on learning, mutual support, and overcoming challenges.
The Rise of Small Farmers in Tesalia: A Paradigm of Cooperation

The achievement of these farmers isn't by accident; it comes from their dedication to education. Members, including some over 70 years old, have graduated as Technicians in Livestock Production from Sena regional Huila. This historical milestone has allowed them to modernize farms, enhance the management of grazing areas, and improve livestock genetics by introducing dual-purpose breeds like bramolando, leading to increased productivity and efficiency.

Today, thanks to Asopegate, producers who once managed only two pastures now optimize up to 45, applying rotation and sustainable management techniques. Covering a total of 250 hectares, these farmers are leveraging their newfound knowledge to access resources and credits, preparing nine projects for Sena's Emprender Fund. Fedegán has been instrumental in this development, providing workshops and knowledge transfer programs, thereby affirming its commitment to these small producers.

Asopegate stands as a beacon for Colombia's cattle industry, showcasing that with cooperation, education, and robust support, small farmers can become the main actors in their economic and social development. The next major goal for this community is to achieve certification in Good Livestock Practices (BPG) for milk production, ensuring their continued growth and sustainability.
