Sinaloa's main dairy basin is experiencing a significant drop in milk production due to extreme temperatures.
The Impact of Heat on Sinaloa's Dairy Production
The relentless heat is hitting Sinaloa's primary dairy basin hard, with daily milk production falling by as much as 10,000 liters due to the soaring temperatures. As José Antonio Lizárraga Rivera, President of the Local Livestock Association of Mazatlán, explains, prior to the heat wave, production levels reached 100,000 liters daily.

However, the heat has forced producers to adjust their operations as pasteurizers, which receive the milk, demand a steady supply. "There is indeed a decline because the heat affects both the dairy farmers and the preservation of the product," says Lizárraga. He notes that while fluctuations are typical when temperatures rise, this season has seen considerable mermas (declines) that also necessitate stricter control over milk production due to its perishable nature.

The decrease in milk output is expected to continue until October, with a potential increase as cooler weather begins to set in later in the year.
