Tesco Products Contain PFAS, Raising Health Concerns

Research conducted by Foodrise and the University of Birmingham has detected the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in a wide range of Tesco's own-brand food products. The study tested 30 different items, including fish, dairy, and meat products, and found PFAS in every sample. These chemicals, known as 'forever chemicals', are associated with health issues such as liver damage, cancer, and pregnancy complications.

The highest concentrations of PFAS were found in Tesco's boneless cod fillets, sardines in brine, and turkey sausages, with respective concentrations of 1.198 ng/g, 1.192 ng/g, and 0.899 ng/g. Dr. Mohamed Abdallah, chair in environmental chemistry at the University of Birmingham, expressed alarm at the universal presence of PFAS in the tested items.

PFAS are known for their persistence in the environment and ability to accumulate in the human body, raising concerns even at low levels. The European Food Safety Authority has set a guideline for the weekly intake of certain PFAS at 4.4 nanograms per kilogram of body weight, but some scientists argue that these limits may not fully account for the chemical's cumulative effects.

Carina Millstone, executive director of Foodrise, criticized Tesco for selling products with potentially harmful PFAS, urging the supermarket to take immediate action to eliminate these substances. The presence of PFAS was most notable in fish and seafood, but also appeared in everyday items like turkey sausages and milk.

Tesco has responded by stating that their products comply with UK and EU legislation limits for PFAS and that they are working with suppliers to meet upcoming EU regulations concerning food packaging. A spokesperson emphasized that product safety is a priority for the supermarket.

The campaigners have previously urged other UK supermarkets to address PFAS contamination in food packaging. Environment Minister Emma Hardy highlighted the government's commitment to tackling PFAS through a coordinated action plan unveiled earlier this year, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to safer alternatives.
