Tamil Nadu's Dairy Training Program Aims to Boost Rural Employment
Tamil Nadu has launched a 25-day Dairy Farm Assistant training program aimed at equipping rural youth with practical skills for the livestock sector. Implemented under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme, the program is sponsored by the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation and executed by the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. This training is conducted at specialized sites such as the Bargur Cattle Research Station, focusing on first-generation learners.
The curriculum is designed to provide a technical understanding of modern dairy operations, covering topics like selecting healthy dairy animals, constructing cattle sheds, and managing the health and nutritional cycle of livestock. Participants also receive training in clean milk production, food safety, and the creation of value-added dairy products.
Hands-on learning is a core component of the program. Trainees engage in tasks such as milking, feeding, and maintaining shed hygiene, while also learning to use modern farm equipment like milking machines and chaff cutters. The program aims to ensure that participants can confidently work on a dairy farm or start their own unit.
The training delivers measurable outcomes, including improved job opportunities and higher earning potential for participants. It fosters confidence in starting small dairy units and raises awareness about animal health and efficient production methods.
High enrollment rates, especially among rural youth and women, highlight the program's role in regional economic growth. By bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and practical application, the initiative is creating a new generation of skilled dairy entrepreneurs in rural Tamil Nadu.
