Sumul Dairy and Suzuki Collaborate to Transform Cattle Dung into Biofuel

In a significant move towards sustainable energy, Sumul Dairy, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and Suzuki Motor Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant in Surat, India. This collaborative effort aims to convert cattle dung into biofuel, providing a new revenue stream for local farmers and supporting India's green energy initiatives.

The project capitalizes on Sumul Dairy's extensive milk-collection network to ensure a steady supply of feedstock fr om local farmers. By integrating Suzuki's automotive technology, the venture demonstrates a novel approach to agribusiness, wh ere agricultural by-products become valuable resources for the energy sector.

Beyond waste management, this initiative addresses critical issues like organic waste disposal in high-density livestock areas and the increasing demand for clean, cost-effective fuel alternatives. The plant will employ advanced fermentation and purification processes to produce biogas that meets automotive standards, showcasing a new level of sophistication in the Indian dairy sector.

The economic benefits for dairy farmers are a focal point of this project. By transforming waste into wealth, farmers gain an additional income source, enhancing the financial resilience of rural households. This project serves as a benchmark for sustainable development in the Global South, highlighting the potential of public-private-cooperative models.

As the international dairy community observes this development, the Surat plant is poised to set a new standard for integrating dairy infrastructure with bio-energy transitions, reinforcing the dairy sector's role in sustainable energy solutions.
