Structural Changes in Argentina's Dairy Sector in 2026

The Argentine dairy industry is experiencing a structural reconfiguration, accelerated during the first four months of 2026. The latest report from the Argentine Dairy Chain Observatory (OCLA), based on official records from SENASA, highlights a trend towards concentration. Despite a decrease in the total number of production units, the remaining establishments have shown significantly higher scale indicators compared to previous years.

In April 2026, the number of dairy farms decreased by 2.58% compared to the same month in the previous year. However, this reduction is somewhat offset by an increase in the size of the remaining herds. The national average now stands at 175 cows per establishment, up from 171 in 2025, indicating a push for greater operational efficiency to tackle current cost and competitiveness challenges.

The phenomenon of production concentration is centered in the Cuenca Central region, which includes the provinces of Santa Fe, Córdoba, Buenos Aires, and Entre Ríos. This area accounts for 90% of the country's dairy farms and 95.5% of the total cows in Argentina. Larger establishments, those with more than 500 cows, represent just 7.1% of the total but contribute to over 33% of national dairy production.

Conversely, small producers with herds of fewer than 100 cows remain highly vulnerable. Although they constitute 32.3% of the production units, they contribute only 8% to the total herd and less than 10% of the milk that enters the industry. This trend is not temporary; since 1988, the rate of business cessation has averaged 3.2% annually, aligning Argentina with other major global exporters undergoing similar consolidation and scaling processes.
