Strong Demand and High Prices at CCM's Livestock Market
The CCM livestock market experienced a day of strong trading, particularly in the dairy and prime sheep sectors. A notable sale was a red and white Holstein heifer from TD Goldie and Son, which sold for £3,550, the highest price of the day. This heifer, sired by Reeve and recently calved, was purchased by J Gooch from Cononley. Another heifer from the same herd, Wiskemanor Lock Susie, sold for £2,500, with the average price of the pair reaching £3,025.
The market also featured a lively auction of 2,171 prime sheep, including 1,671 spring lambs, 72 prime hoggs, and 428 cast ewes and rams. Additionally, six clean cattle under 30 months and three cast cattle were sold. Rearing calves continued to achieve strong prices, with a British Blue bull calf from P&J Brown, Askwith, reaching £1,060. Other notable sales included dairy bred calves from J Gooch, Cononley, sold for £880 and £860, respectively.
Angus bulls were among the top native breeds, with a sale price of £680 from M&R Smith, Winterburn. Heifer calves, though fewer in number, also fetched high prices. A Charolais heifer from J Peel, Newsholme, sold for £730, while C Smith & Sons, Sutton-in-Craven, sold similar heifers for £700, £680, and £670.
Cattle prices were strong, with prime steers from Hargreaves Farms selling at top prices per head of £2,718, £2,697, £2,659, and £2,646, and per kilogram prices reaching up to 425.5p. Heifers from HE Simpson achieved prices of £2,533 per head and 437.5p per kilogram. Cull cows averaged 237.5p per kilogram, equating to £1,527 per head.
Overall, there was a robust demand for meaty spring lambs, with an overall average price per kilogram of 441.7p. Prime hoggs averaged 341p per kilogram, while cull ewes fetched an average of £198.60 per head.
