Strong Dairy Sales and Sheepdog Auction Success at UK Markets
The UK livestock market has reported significant activity, with notable sales across various categories. In Skipton's online sheepdog sale, a Scottish-bred bitch named Sue achieved a top price of £12,100. Sue, a fully trained black and white bitch bred by David Wood and Emma Jane of Crookhill Sheepdogs, was purchased by an undisclosed buyer in Surrey. This sale was part of a broader trend of strong prices for sheepdogs, with other notable sales including Beacons Moss for £8,400 and Glan y Gors Vali for £6,100.
At the Gisburn dairy auction, the third sale of the month resulted in a top price of £3,980 for a pedigree Newbirks heifer from A. Lawson and Son, Arthington. In total, 22 other heifers were sold for £3,000 or more. Among these, Aireburn Raiton Annie from G. B. Moorhouse was sold for £3,900. The average prices for pedigree heifers and cows were reported at £3,021 and £2,420 respectively, indicating a robust market for dairy cattle.
Moreover, the Border and Lakeland Holstein Club sale highlighted a heifer from Messrs Wilson, Penrith, achieving a top price of 4,000gns. The champion heifer, Stowbeck Tarmac Gilly, is recognized for high lifetime production and high classifications. Other significant sales included Netherside Cruz Chersie from the Yuill family, which fetched 3,800gns.
In addition to dairy and sheepdog sales, the spring lamb trade at Penrith maintained strong figures. The sale averaged 450.45p/kg, with a top price per head of £272 for a 59kg Suffolk. This reflects continued demand for heavy lambs, which saw prices rising by £10/head from previous weeks.
Overall, these sales underline the ongoing strength and resilience of the UK's livestock markets, particularly in the dairy and sheep sectors.
