Spanish Dairy Industry Faces Sustainability Crisis Amid Price and Cost Pressures

The Spanish dairy industry is experiencing a significant crisis as tensions between milk processors and producers have reached a breaking point. According to Donaciano Dujo's analysis published in Agrodigital, systematic reductions in prices paid to producers are leading to the potential mass closure of dairy farms. In May 2026, the industry is facing a lethal paradox where operational costs, including diesel, electricity, and animal feed, are rising due to international instability, while new industrial contracts propose reductions of 7 to 10 cents per liter.

The situation is particularly dire in regions such as Galicia and Castilla y León, where the rate of farmer disappearances has accelerated to two per day, leaving only 8,661 active producers nationwide. Agricultural organizations claim that the Food Chain Law has become ineffective, failing to prevent the industry from imposing conditions that set farmgate prices below production costs, thereby disrupting the critical balance needed for generational renewal and farm viability.

This scenario has led to extreme protests, including milk spills on roads and blockades of industrial plants. The primary sector warns that farmers are not flexible and that the reduction in the livestock herd is irreversible, threatening food sovereignty. For the dairy industry, the challenge is not only market-related but also concerns the survival of its supply chain: without a profitable production base, the country's processing capacity faces a medium-term structural supply shortage.
