Solar Milk Chilling Revolutionizes Dairy Supply in Maharashtra
In the drought-prone districts of Maharashtra's Marathwada region, the implementation of solar-powered bulk milk chillers (BMCs) has significantly altered the dairy supply chain. Swayam Shikshan Prayog (SSP), in collaboration with three Farmer Producer Companies (FPOs), has established a network of 100 BMCs across Dharashiv and Latur districts. This initiative currently supports around 3,000 to 3,500 women in 100 villages.
Previously, dairy farmers faced challenges due to high temperatures and the absence of refrigeration, which often led to spoilage or lower prices. The introduction of village-level chilling facilities allows milk to be stored safely after both morning and evening milking sessions, thus easing the time pressure on farmers and enhancing the reliability of milk marketing.
Women, who traditionally managed livestock, are now more directly involved in sales, with payments processed through digital systems linked to village collection centers. Milk quality and quantity are assessed using mobile applications, and payments are made every ten days.
The solar-powered system not only improves market access but also reduces operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) notes that dairy cold chains are a significant source of carbon dioxide emissions, with cooling and chilling accounting for up to 30% of the dairy sector's energy consumption. Each solar-powered BMC, equipped with a 3-kilowatt system, can store 250 liters of milk, collectively handling an average of 13,500 liters daily.
The environmental benefits are substantial. The project estimates that a 1,000-liter solar bulk milk chiller can cut approximately six tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. Across 100 smaller units, total annual savings are estimated at 150 tonnes of CO₂. Additionally, the reduction in transportation needs saves around 100 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
Solar energy has also enhanced operational reliability in areas with inconsistent electricity supply. The systems allow milk to remain chilled for up to 24 hours without relying on diesel generators, thus maintaining quality and reducing dependency on fossil fuels.
Maharashtra produces roughly 16 million tonnes of milk annually, representing 6.7% of India's total milk production. With 7.5 million households involved in dairy farming and women contributing to 70% of livestock management activities, the solar chiller initiative marks a significant step in enhancing rural livelihoods and supporting India's goal of net-zero emissions by 2070.
