Singapore Reviews Nutri-Grade Framework for Milk in Schools
The Singapore government is assessing its Nutri-Grade framework to ensure it accurately reflects the nutritional value of plain milk, particularly for young children. The framework currently grades beverages, including milk, based on sugar and saturated fat levels, with a focus on promoting options with 'A' and 'B' ratings.
Full cream milk, which contains more saturated fat, is discouraged for older children due to potential health risks, though it remains available for younger children in preschools. The Ministry of Health and Health Promotion Board are reviewing policies to address public feedback suggesting full-fat milk should be available in schools for students to make their own choices.
Notably, beverages with unhealthy additives, like non-nutritive sweeteners, are prohibited in schools despite potentially receiving a 'B' rating under Nutri-Grade, as they may influence children's taste preferences towards sweeter foods.
The review considers feedback from the community, including parents of underweight children who prefer full-fat milk options. The government aims to ensure that nutrition policies are both evidence-based and relevant.
