Shropshire Dairy Farm Diversifies with New Dog Walking Facility

A farming family in Shropshire has submitted a planning application to open a secure dog walking field at their Welbatch Farm, located at Hook-a-Gate near Shrewsbury. The farm, which has been operated by the same family since 1914, is part of a larger dairy enterprise. The decision to diversify comes in response to fluctuating milk prices and rising input costs, which have made traditional farming income streams less reliable.

The proposed facility, as outlined in the application to Shropshire Council, is intended to provide a stable and additional income stream amid uncertainties in the agricultural industry. The application highlights that the farm has been approached by local dog owners seeking a safe, enclosed space for exercising their dogs.

The plans detail the inclusion of a modest parking area and a shelter measuring 3 by 2 meters. If approved, the facility will operate between 8 am and 5 pm from October to March and extend to 7 am to 9 pm during the summer months. Advance bookings will be required, and the field will be limited to six dogs per booking.

The planning application is open for public consultation until July 20, and details can be accessed online. The initiative is seen as a complementary and low-intensity rural enterprise aimed at enhancing the long-term sustainability and resilience of the farm business.
